How might we offer our athletes a complete training experience on their Apple Watch?

The standalone training experience on our Apple Watch app is one of the most requested features from our users in Customer Service feedback. Our users love using the Apple Watch for their workouts, but logging into the Freeletics app each time to load the next workout for the entire workout and reviewing the content in the app is not the ideal experience.

So, during the week of Hackathon 2021, we decided to make some big improvements to the training experience on the Apple Watch.

Goals

The main goal of the project was to pave the way for the gradual rollout of support for standalone Apple Watch workouts and figure out the market fit and opportunities that wearable devices could bring to Freeletics with the Apple Watch example.

Standalone training experience

We tailored the application of the Freeletics experience on the Apple Watch to provide comprehensive guidance during training. In addition, we leveraged the tracking features of the Apple Watch to offer a more immersive experience, providing meaningful pre/during/after workout information to our users.

New features

  1. Selector for different training modes

  2. Overview of the training session and exercises

  3. Progress of training session and workouts

  4. Exercise video instructions

  5. Data during rest

  6. Smart tips and hints

  7. Training and workout session overview, calorie stats, heart rate, GPS tracking, etc.
